A short-ish list of some of my favourite Hammer horror films. I hope to expand this page as time goes on (and as I take the opportunity to refresh my memory - some of these films I've not seen in years...). I've rated each of the films with one to four crosses: I can be a bit eccentric in my tastes at times, so forgive me. The format is as follows:

Title (year)
Writer
Director
Starring
A few comments, perhaps...

The Quatermass Xperiment (1955)
Richard Landau, Val Guest, from the teleplay by Nigel Kneale
Val Guest
Brian Donlevy, Jack Warner, Richard Wordsworth
Where it all began...

X - The Unknown (1956)

Underrated.

Where it all began, part two.

Forrest Tucker, Peter Cushing, Maureen Connell

Dracula (1958)
Jimmy Sangster, from the novel by Bram Stoker
Terence Fisher
Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, Carol Marsh
I've always preferred the Dracula cycle to the Frankenstein films. The power of Fisher's classic movie hasn't dimmed with the years.

The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958)
Jimmy Sangster, H. Hurford Janes (additional dialogue)
Terence Fisher
Peter Cushing, Francis Matthews, Eunice Gayson

The Brides of Dracula (1960)
Jimmy Sangster, Peter Bryan, Edward Percy
Terence Fisher
Peter Cushing, David Peel, Marita Hunt, Yvonne Monlaur, Freda Jackson
If this had starred Christopher Lee it would have been the best Fisher Dracula by a country mile. As it stands, it still edges in front by a nose.

The Two Faces of Dr Jekyll (1960)
Wolf Mankowitz, from the novel by R.L. Stevenson
Terence Fisher
Paul Massie, Dawn Addams, Christopher Lee, David Kossoff

The Phantom of the Opera (1962)

More enjoyable than its obscure status suggests.

Anthony Hinds

The Gorgon (1964)
John Gilling, from a story by J. Llewellyn Devine

Dracula Prince of Darkness (1966)
John Sansom, from an idea by Anthony Hinds

Arguably an improvement on Lee's first Dracula film, although things run out of steam a little towards the end.

Peter Bryan
John Gilling
Andre Morell, Diane Clare, Brook Williams, Jacqueline Pearce, John Carson

The Reptile (1966)
Anthony Hinds
John Gilling
Noel Willman, Jennifer Daniel, Ray Barrett, Jacqueline Pearce, Michael Ripper

My favourite - and certainly the cleverest - Hammer Frankenstein film.

The Mummy's Shroud (1967)
John Gilling, from a story by Anthony Hinds
John Gilling
John Philips, Andre Morell, David Buck

Quatermass and the Pit (1967)

Dracula Has Risen from the Grave (1968)
Anthony Hinds
Freddie Francis
Christopher Lee, Rupert Davies, Veronica Carlson, Barbara Ewing, Barry Andrews, Ewan Hooper
I am doubtless alone in the world in finding this the best Hammer Dracula film.

Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969)
Bert Batt, from a story by Anthony Nelson-Keys and Bert Batt
Terence Fisher
Peter Cushing, Veronica Carlson, Simon Ward, Freddie Jones, Thorley Walters

Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970)
Anthony Hinds
Peter Sasdy
Christopher Lee, Geoffrey Keen, Gwen Watford, Linda Hayden, Peter Sallis, Anthony Corlan, Isla Blair, John Carson, Martin Jarvis, Ralph Bates, Roy Kinnear
Overrated (in some quarters) and a tad repetitive.

The Horror of Frankenstein (1970)
Jeremy Burnham, Jimmy Sangster
Jimmy Sangster
Ralph Bates, Kate O'Mara, Veronica Carlson, Dennis Price

Scars of Dracula (1970)
Anthony Hinds
Roy Ward Baker
Christopher Lee, Dennis Waterman, Jenny Hanley, Christopher Matthews, Patrick Troughton
Rubbish - and the ending is excruciatingly contrived.

The Vampire Lovers (1970)
Tudor Gates, from a story by Harry Fine, Tudor Gates, Michael Style, from the story Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu
Roy Ward Baker
Ingrid Pitt, Pippa Steele, Madeline Smith, Peter Cushing, George Cole

One for pre-pubescent schoolboys everywhere...

Lust for a Vampire (1971)
Tudor Gates, from the story Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu
Jimmy Sangster
Barbara Jefford, Ralph Bates, Suzannah Leigh, Yutte Stensgaard, Michael Johnson
Ditto. 'Strange Love' has to be heard to be believed...

Eric Porter, Angharad Rees, Jane Merrow

Twins of Evil (1971)
Tudor Gates, from the story Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu
John Hough
Madeleine Collinson, Mary Collinson, Peter Cushing, Kathleen Byron, Dennis Price
The best film in the Karnstein trilogy, but I don't suppose that's saying much.

Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde (1971)
Brian Clemens
Roy Ward Baker
Ralph Bates, Martine Beswick, Gerald Sim, Lewis Fiander

Blood from the Mummy's Tomb (1971)
Christopher wicking, from the novel Jewel of the Seven Stars by Bram Stoker

Vampire Circus (1972)
Judson Kinberg, from a story by George Baxt, Wilbur Stark

Almost the last great Hammer vampire film...

Demons of the Mind (1972)
Christopher Wicking, from a story by Christopher Wicking, Frank Godwin
Peter Sykes
Paul Jones, Patrick Magee, Yvonne Mitchell, Robert Hardy, Gillian Hills, Michael Hordern, Kenneth J. Warren

Dracula AD 1972 (1972)
Don Houghton
Alan Gibson
Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Stephanie Beacham, Christopher Neame, Caroline Munro
Lee and Cushing finally get to reprise their most famous roles in the same film, and what happens? It's camp nonsense. Still, it might break the ice at parties...

The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973)
Don Houghton
Alan Gibson
Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Michael Coles, William Franklyn, Freddie Jones, Joanna Lumley
Er... A tad better than the previous. Lee's last Dracula.

Peter Cushing, Shane Briant, Madeline Smith, Dave Prowse

Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter (1973)
Brian Clemens
Brian Clemens

Definitely the last great Hammer vampire film. The script and mise en scène are terrific.

The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires (1974)
Don Houghton
Roy Ward Baker
Peter Cushing, Julie Ege, David Chiang, Robin Stewart
Cushing's final film for Hammer.

To the Devil... A Daughter (1976)
Christopher Wicking, based on the novel by Dennis Wheatley
Peter Sykes
Richard Widmark, Christopher Lee, Honor Blackman, Denholm Elliot, Michael Goodliffe, Nastassja Kinski
Lee's final bow, and Hammer's last horror film. Gets a bonus mark for having Nastassja Kinski in it...
